Discovery Ag is building a nationwide Rural Internet of Things Network with Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) connectivity to bring smart agriculture solutions to farmers.
The Rural IoT Network is a Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) that will provide the crucial connectivity for millions of smart sensors to be connected across Australian farms.
The network will help to solve connectivity and affordability problems for farmers by enabling a low-cost end-to-end standards based solutions comprising on-farm networks, network-ready sensors, and access to simple on-farm tools that farmers can use to monitor information and take timely action.
Farmers will be able to receive granular real-time data on a range of measures such as soil moisture, rainfall, tank levels and livestock via a network of in-situ low-cost wireless sensors. The network infrastructure will be installed to cover large areas and connect to thousands of sensors affordably, reliably and securely. The sensors operate on very low power and can operate ‘in the field’ for years without the need for intervention.
Facts at a Glance
Australia’s first industrial-grade LoRaWAN IoT network for rural Australia
Low cost, long range, low powered network solution allowing millions of sensors and devices to be connected
Network coverage of irrigated agriculture expected by October 2018
Built to meet farmers’ coverage requirements in farm gate where it’s needed most
Benefits for Farmers
With site specific, real-time data farmers will be better informed of their land, crops, livestock and assets, providing multiple benefits.
The ability to align the timing and application of crop inputs with the seasonal performance of paddocks
IMPROVED WATER USE EFFICIENCY
Understanding rainfall and soil moisture allows for smarter production and marketing decisions.
INTEGRATING SENSORS AND MODELLING
More accurate and reliable outcomes by incorporating the farm’s own data into production modelling tools.
NEW BUSINESS MODELS
Over time, improved data will drive new finance and insurance solutions.
Our collaborative approach encourages other sensor developers to deploy their solutions using the Rural IoT Network.
The ability to not only monitor multiple sites but to also send commands from the network back down to a sensor or actuator.
DEEPER FARM INSIGHTS
Objective, automated data collection to build a deeper understanding of farm performance.
Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technology is extremely well suited to agricultural requirements. The technology is already used in farms across in Europe and the USA and has proven to be low cost and effective.
LoRaWAN-enabled sensors are available at a relatively low cost and a LoRaWAN on-farm gateway can cover large areas and connect to thousands of sensors at an affordable upfront cost.
